Lyric of the Day: John Newton

The Lord has promised good to me
His word my hope secures
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures

Amazing Grace : fourth verse

Hymn written in 1779 by English poet and clergyman, John Newton! How’s that for your trivia fact of the day?

Ending the week with a nice classic, posting an old gospel rendition by Mahalia Jackson in the link above. I discovered my favorite verse of this age-old hymn when singing this on Sunday, also given above.

This is one of those songs where I think the melody enchants almost more than the words. It certainly has taken a power and life of its own – the U.S. Library Congress supposedly has over 3,000 versions in its stores!

P.S. Chris Tomlin does a lovely version that includes a new refrain.

P.P.S. And here is a nice Q&A on the original verses of Amazing Grace.
